RYWC is a sanctioned USA Wrestling Club and has an Elementary Program (K – Grade 5) and a Middle School Program (Grade 6 – Grade 8) that includes 60+ new and experienced wrestlers per season
As a club, we strive to create a safe, fun, and positive environment for our members to learn the fundamentals of the sport, experience the commitment, challenge and camaraderie found in wrestling, and gain skills important for wrestling and life
When is the season?
Our season runs from November to February with the first practice on Monday, 11/6/17.
We anticipate that that the start of the season will overlap with the last couple of weeks of a few Fall sports and it is typical to have some wrestlers start a couple weeks into the season.
What are the dates and times of practices?
We keep an updated calendar of all practices, matches, and tournaments (Calendar), but in general:
*For our K and 1st graders only, there is an optional 8:00PM practice end time. The elementary coaches will arrange a team water break at 8:00PM and during that time our K and 1st graders with their parent can quietly exit the practice. This is a new format this year to accommodate families for our youngest wrestlers. This is not a required end time and if you choose that your wrestler continues for the remaining 1/2hr, please feel free to do so.
Where are the practices?
What is the cost to join?
**Registration remains open for the first 2 weeks so that kids can experience the sport without commitment**
Our registration for the program will open in mid-October and close on November 20 with a registration cost of $175 per wrestler and a family cap of $225.
Separately, a USA Wrestling Athlete Membership card must be purchased via https://www.usawmembership.com/. Current cost of Athlete membership is $42. Membership Year runs from September 1 through August 31 and permits the wrestler to participate in USA sanctioned clubs and competitions throughout the year.
What is the policy for practices regarding drop-off and pick-up?
Parents are free to drop-off and pick-up for both Elementary and Middle School teams but please arrive on time for start and end of practices. Wrestlers should enter through the high school main entrance or side entrance and not through the doors that lead directly into the Auxiliary Gym. As a team, we ask all wrestlers to help in rolling up the mats at the end of practice before leaving.
Must the wrestler attend every practice? Will a wrestler be penalized for missing practice?
No. Our program is run by all volunteer coaches/parents and we understand conflicting schedules. We encourage your wrestler to attend every practice but it is not required. Attending as many practices as possible will only increase your wrestler’s skills and make him/her stronger.
What is the required gear?
Wrestling shoes (worn ONLY on the mat, not outside), headgear, mouth guards (if wrestler has braces) and uniform for matches and tournament. The uniform consists of the traditional one-piece singlet or a newer option, which is a compression shirt & wrestling shorts*. We will have an online store open from October 28rd to November 13th that will offer Ridgefield Wrestling branded uniforms and optional gear like fight shorts, t-shirts, hoodies, and 1/4 zip shirts. Wrestling shoes, headgear, and mouthguards are available at local sport stores or online at companies (see uniforms for more information). Finally, we also have a box of used shoes and singlets in good condition that can be used by our wrestlers.
*As a note, the compression shirt and wrestling shorts is a new two-piece uniform option this year. More info regarding two-piece uniform option can be found at the National Federation of State High School Association.
What should my wrestler wear/bring to practice?
For practice, wrestlers typically practice in shorts, t-shirt, wrestling shoes (worn ONLY on the mat, not outside), and headgear. Wrestlers should also bring a water bottle.
What’s the deal with matches and tournaments? What’s the schedule? Are they required?
Throughout the season we have wrestling matches with nearby towns. The matches are usually during the week and the wrestlers are matched up by age, weight, experience and skill level. Additionally, there are optional USA wrestling tournaments throughout the season, which usually on Sundays. These optional tournaments require a separate registration fee.
What about hygiene?
We take hygiene very seriously. We ensure that mats are cleaned and sanitized between practices. Wrestlers are informed of best practices. Wrestlers are advised to wear cleaning workout clothes, trim fingernails, and encouraged to shower each night after practice. Antibacterial foam can be purchased and used before and after matches. To help prevent the spread of skin issues, coaches will try to check wrestlers at each practice. Additionally, skin checks take place before matches and tournaments to reduce spread of infections. However, it is the responsibility of each family to inspect your wrestler daily for any skin issue. If your wrestler has a skin issue, prior to returning to practice the wrestler must have (a) the area treated for 72 hours, (b) covered, and (c) the following form completed by a Medical Doctor.
